Tatis Jr. Won't Go Away - Gets Cover Of MLB The Show 21
Fernando Tatis Jr., who batted .277 with 61 strikeouts in 59 games last season, has been announced as the cover athlete for MLB The Show 21. The popular video game has been around since 2006 and Tatis Jr. makes history as the youngest slugger to be chosen for the cover. Atta boy kid!
Not surprisingly, Tatis Jr. who just turned 22 somehow, is also the first Padres player to earn this distinction. Although he's played less than a full season of games, he's quickly established himself as a marketing darling. He picked up a national endorsement from Gatorade this offseason and has deals with Adidas, Hyperice, Mizuno gloves and Victus bats.
The player nicknamed El Niño had the 4th highest selling jersey last season, behind Bryce Harper, Mookie Betts and Aaron Judge. Harper and Judge have been on covers before, Mookie has not.
As for the video game itself, this version will be the first to offer cross platform play! Which means anyone can get this smoke, regardless of console (find me on Playstation as Tumysticks).
In all seriousness, Tatis is an exciting player who can hopefully attract a younger audience to the game. He's still four years from free agency, but the Padres are reportedly looking to lock him into a long term deal. Southern California can look forward to the Betts vs. Tatis vs. Trout debate for a decade!
